well that deepens. if you want to download dayly or hourly some projects it may would be better. but for a single project I wouldn't download the app since you have also to create an account for that, although you can use google for that if I am remindering riht. Oh desktop app is strange. Usable but yep, very strange for me. I prefer the website or mobile app. But mobile version i use only for notifications and slash or quick statuses.

If you are familiar with command line then downloading the repo is just like git clone https://github.com/ownername/reponame But if you want to download just releases or some files from the repo then it is no worth installing an app for this, really easier to just open releases page and download.
