Actually antares autotune is reliable and accessible vst, though it costs money, but it's convenient to use.

So is the auto tune that comes with reaper bad or something?

The Antares one is the best in my opinion, not overly complicated and yet gives a lot of wiggleroom when playing around with the parameters.
