How accessible is this thing called world of warcraft?

So I heard that this game is quite playable since some time, however, I'm not sure how much, what you have to/can do in it exactly and how well it works. Do any of you have any experience playing this thing? I heard its a subscription game, so I'd just have a little bit of info before maybe getting that, because I may actually consider investing into this if its good and if that means that is something I can play with sighted friends
